NEK-TV began life as the access television outreach of the Northeast Access Committee (NAC). Based out of the North Country Union High School, the operation began in 1993 with a few VCRs, some cablecast equipment, and a lot of hard work. A second facility was planned for southern Orleans County in 2004, with completing of this studio space at Lake region Union High in the spring of 2006. NEK-TV stayed in the same location at North Country until 2007 undergoing one major remodel during that time. Late in 2006, word came down that the North Country Career Center was to experience a remodeling project of it’s own. Because fo that, NEK would have to move out of its long-time facilities into temporary and sporadically served space. The new studios at North Country are anticipated to be completed in February of 2008. However, new studio space at North Country will no longer be located on the first floor, but actually inside the building on the second floor. While this arrangement lends itself to new opportunities for Educational partnerships and daytime public use, it did give the board at NAC pause...the time was right for stepping out on our own with a full-time, public facility located in the heart of Newport! After much searching and discussions with cable provider Comcast, a location was selected right next to the Comcast offices. This new space on East Main Street provides three times the workable space, plus a large sound stage for Chromakey video production. More on the Chromakey studio will appear in a future addition to this article… FOR HISTORIC PHOTOS OF NEK-TV, CLICK HERE !!!
